In this role, she will be among 20 governors providing leadership and guidance to 100,000 diverse members of the D.C. Bar who hail from all 50 states and more than 80 foreign countries. It’s the largest unified bar in the United States.

What Does the D.C. Bar Do?

The organization’s mission is to enhance access to justice, improve the legal system, and empower lawyers to achieve excellence. It provides an oversight structure to maintain the profession’s ethical standards and rules of conduct.

Created by the U.S. Court of Appeals, the D.C. Bar’s work is designed to protect the public and the court system.

This year’s ballot included 10 candidates vying for five vacant seats on the Board of Governors. Ms. Bertram received the third-highest number of votes in the group.

Catherine Bertram’s Role on the Board of Governors

Ms. Bertram’s election is the capstone of her involvement in the D.C. Bar, the most prestigious group of its kind in the country.

She has served in progressively responsible leadership roles within the bar over the past decade, having lived and worked in the District for 30 years. Her service on the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Committee, including two terms as chair, and on the Pro Bono Center Board demonstrated to her peers her keen ability to lead these important functions of the organization.

“I’m inspired by the members I’ll be serving with on the Board of Governors,” Ms. Bertram said. “Their dedication to the work of the D.C. Bar will definitely move this organization forward.”

About Catherine Bertram

Ms. Bertram’s entire adult life has prepared her for service at the pinnacle of her profession.  She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where she was in the Psi Chi Honor Society, competed as a member of the varsity crew team, and was a national rowing champion.

She earned her law degree at the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, where she was named “Woman Law Student of the Year” and served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Judicial Notice, the law school’s law review journal.

Before opening her own boutique law practice in 2018, Ms. Bertram served as both a medical malpractice attorney and director of risk management at Georgetown University Hospital. There she came to fully understand the defense side of the practice. The experience prepared her to cross the aisle to represent patients and families in medical malpractice cases against hospitals, doctors, and medical device manufacturers. Her firm focuses almost exclusively on medical errors, unsafe medical devices, and medical negligence.

Bertram & Murphy’s success thus far has earned her the respect of her peers. A few of her multi-million-dollar awards included birth injuries, child injuries, surgical malpractice, hospital malpractice, misdiagnosis, and her highest award – $35.6 million in a case involving a medical error.
